Kevin Roman Mays was born March 8, 1968 in Savannah, Georgia from his late mother Laurie Yvonne Barnes and late father Harry Mays, Jr. He leaves behind his two beautiful daughters Erin MacKenzie Douglas-Mays and Au’Ree Merced Cosme-Mays. He also leaves behind his sister Joslyn Mays, his brothers Harry Mays III, Terry Mays, James L. Garvin, Jr. and Michael Mays, in addition to a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Kevin began his education in the Chatham County school district from Kindergarten until 8th grade. Once leaving Georgia with his mother and his step father James L. Garvin, Sr. to East Orange, New Jersey, Kevin continued his education at East Orange High School. During his tenure there, he took up the hobby of photography. His senior year, Kevin became the editor-in-chief of his high school year book, graduating in 1986.
Kevin was accepted to Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts where he studied electrical engineering. Kevin began broadening his friend group, creating lifelong friendships which are still strong to this day. After graduating from Northeastern University, Kevin accepted a position with Motorola in Boynton Beach, Florida. He worked there for a number of years until he decided to accept a position with the company in Dallas, Texas to lead a special team of engineers.
Eventually Kevin decided to move back home to Georgia where he worked for a host of companies, spearheading special projects and developing different products in the engineering field.
On the morning of August 23, 2023, Kevin lost his battle with prostate cancer shortly after 2:08 a.m., at Piedmont Eastside Medical Center. He was surrounded by his beloved life partner Vilmerlly Cosme, his sister Joslyn Mays, and his brother James L. Garvin, Jr. Kevin touched so many people throughout his 55 year journey of life. One of Kevin’s mantras was “the ripple effect.” He always said if one person can make a difference to one person’s life, then this will cause a “ripple effect” of goodness, life lessons and love. We ask that you keep his daughters and family in your prayers.
