May Vestal Leonard Curtis, 90, died Tuesday, November 30, 2010, at her home in Liberty, NC. A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 3, at 12:30 in Fairview Cemetery in Liberty, conducted by the Rev. Eugene Dean and the Rev. Craig Curtis.
Mrs. Curtis was born on January 8, 1920, and raised in Lexington, NC. After attending Duke University, she married and moved to Liberty, NC, in 1946. She and her husband, John, operated the Curtis Theatre in Liberty for over 40 years where they were known and appreciated for the tremendous influence they had on generations of young people that came through their doors. She was an active member and Trustee of First United Methodist Church, and she was known for her beautiful yard, her flowers and rose garden, and her avid passion for Carolina basketball.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, John William Curtis, Jr. She is survived by two sons, John W. Curtis, III, and wife, Claire, of Hattiesburg, MS, and James L. Curtis, of Aspen, CO.; two grandsons, Christopher John Curtis and Craig Joseph Curtis; and three great grandchildren, Turner John Curtis, Mary Lucille Curtis, and Joseph MacAllister Curtis.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 12:15 at Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty, prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 220, Liberty, NC, 27298 or a charity of your choice.
