Jeannette was born in Clifton, Indiana, to Earl and Ethel Miles Snyder on January 24, 1918. She attended school in Clifton, Brownsville, and Short High School. In May 1935, Jeannette married Sylvan Handley who died on April 30, 1987. Jeannette was employed for 28 years as a cashier at Hooks Drug Store in Richmond and Liberty. She was a member of the Liberty Presbyterian Church and the Union County Historical Society. Jeannette volunteered for many years at South View Apartments boxing up food for Meals on Wheels. Because she was a caregiver for so many in her family and people in the community, Jeannette was nicknamed, “Florence Nightingale”. She also enjoyed the weekly Monday evening Euchre Games.
Jeanette is survived by two sons: Donald E. Handley and wife Donna of Liberty, and Neil S. Handley of Indianapolis; a sister, Dorothy Snyder White of Liberty; two grandsons: Steve Handley and wife Melissa, and Peter Handley and wife Tara; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Jeannette was preceded in death by her parents; a sister: Okabelle Williams; two brothers: Maurice and Ralph Snyder; and a grandson: Scott Handley.
A public graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 6, 2015, at West Point Cemetery in Liberty with Rev. Dr. Roger Sherwood of the Liberty Presbyterian Church officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Liberty Presbyterian Church or the Union County Historical Society.
