GILBERT - Ruth Marie McElrath Sox, age of 91, of Gilbert, SC; formerly of the Eau Claire neighborhood of Columbia, SC and recently of Oklahoma City, Ok died peacefully Tuesday, January 23, 2018. She was born in New Haven, Connecticut on March 13, 1926 to the late, Leland F. McElrath and Ruth Kahl McElrath. She was married to David E. Sox, Sr. on March 24, 1947. Ruth enjoyed a career in nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Newborn Nursery at Baptist Hospital for 20 years and retired in 1987. She also enjoyed hobbies and passions as an avid reader, loved watching classic movies, listening to Big Band Music of the 40's, drawing, whistling and singing, taking cross-country trips, working with flowers and azaleas and birdwatching. She was a longtime member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, frequented Pisgah Lutheran Church and also a member of the Gilbert Senior Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, David; a son, David “Bubba” Sox, Jr., and a daughter, Donna Sox Long. Ruth is survived by her sister, Delores Sperry and brother, Lee McElrath as well as her children Doreen (Delmer) Porter, Daniel (Michelle) Sox and Della Sisson; grandchildren, Dennis (Mindi) Porter, Darren (Chantelle) Porter, Jonathan Sisson and Laurin Sisson; great-grandchildren, Montana, Erica, Denver, London, Aspen, Noah and Charlotte. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 28, 2018 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Funeral Service will be held at Pisgah Lutheran Church in Lexington, Monday, January 29, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with graveside services following at Southland Memorial Gardens, West Columbia.
