Born in Greenville, South Carolina on October 4, 1956, to Bishop J.Y. (Rossie) Sloan and Mrs. Sue Crain Sloan, Rhonda grew up in Columbia where she graduated from Airport High School. Being the child of a minister, Rhonda spent a great deal of time participating in church activities. In that environment, Rhonda soon discovered her natural gift for music. She used that gift to earn a full scholarship to Columbia College to study music education and vocal performance. As a college student, Rhonda was always performing and teaching. Some of her fondest memories at Columbia College were singing and traveling with the women’s chorus. During those years, Rhonda was recruited to teach voice lessons to three siblings by the name of Kim, Donna and Jay Godwin. Little did she know their parents, Jimmy and Diane Godwin, would play significant roles in Rhonda’s future.
Rhonda graduated college in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts in music education and vocal performance. That same year the Godwins offered Rhonda a job in sales at FSIoffice. Rhonda’s career with FSIoffice spanned 45 years. In that time, Rhonda worked as a senior account manager earning many accolades and awards. Among those honors, she and her sales team were twice the recipients of the company’s highest award, the Buford Griffin Sales award. Southeastern Freight Lines awarded Rhonda and her team World Class Vendor for many years. While she found career success in sales, Rhonda still made time for her two passions–music and her faith.
Rhonda’s foundation in life was her Christian faith. She used her musical talents in many ways to worship and glorify Jesus Christ. She was active in the singles ministry at Shandon Baptist Church leading the praise team and performing in the annual singing Christmas tree for several years. Her beautiful mezzo soprano voice and her experience as a pianist were in demand for weddings, baptisms, funerals, and baby dedications. She also enjoyed song writing and attended a song writers boot camp in Tennessee to fine tune her skills. Rhonda spent the past 15 years as the music director for Victory Fellowship Church where her brother Bishop Tim Sloan is the pastor. She had the voice of an angel and a heart for the Lord.
Rhonda is survived by her brother Bishop Tim Sloan and his wife Tracy and their children Rossi Elizabeth and Nicolas. She is preceded in death by her father Bishop J.Y. (Rossie) Sloan and her mother Sue Crain Sloan.
