LEXINGTON – Funeral services for Mayo Narvey Harmon, 99, will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, September 29, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Pallbearers will be, Alon Cox, George Mathias, Todd Catalanotto, R.W. McCormick, Brian Redd and William Jacobs. Mr. Harmon, husband of the late Elizabeth “Lib” Harmon, died Saturday, September 27, 2014. Born in Lexington on January 12, 1915, he was the son of the late, George Edwin, Sr. and Ardella Kleckley Harmon. He completed the public schools in Lexington and entered Clemson in 1935. At Clemson, Mayo participated in the Calhoun Literary Society, the Future Farmers of America and the 4-H Club. He graduated from Clemson in 1939 with a BS Degree in Vocational Agriculture Education. Mayo taught agriculture from 1939 to 1942 in Bethune, SC. He married Elizabeth Mathias on June 9, 1940 in Lexington, SC and was married to her until her death in January, 2010.
He was called to active duty in February 1942 in the U.S. Army, where he served as a Basic Training Officer at Ft. McClellan in Alabama. In September 1942, he was then called as a replacement Officer, 5th Infantry Division, in Iceland and later he was sent to England and Northern Ireland. Mayo landed at Omaha Beach, 30 days after D-Day. He fought in France, Germany and Luxemburg and he was also in the “Battle of the Bulge.” Having served over three years as a 1st Lieutenant, he received the Bronze Star and was released from active duty in WWII in 1945.
After the war, Mayo was in the grocery business for two years. He then acquired a Dealership with ESSO (now Exxon), Harmon Oil Company, until 1982 and then retired. He served as a school board member with Lexington School District 1. He also was on the original board of directors for the Lexington State Bank (now BB&T) for 16 years.
Mayo has been an active member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Lexington since 1947. His hobbies have included fishing, gardening and traveling.
Mr. Harmon is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Harmon Boyd and husband, Norman; granddaughter, Amy Boyd Berry and husband, Chris; great-grandsons, Will and Landon; and sister-in-law, Helen Vickers. Mr. Harmon is predeceased by his parents, wife and brothers, George Edward, Wingard and Melvin; sisters, Juline Harmon Jacobs, Helen Harmon Boatwright, Addie Harmon Hendrix and Doris Harmon Redd.
