He lived the life of five men. Born in 1928 in Irwin, Pennsylvania, Jim Streeter, aka Coupe, moved to the South in 1939 and lived in Raleigh, NC during World War II. Son of Myrtle and Basil P. Streeter, he played football at Raleigh Broughton High School, including a State Championship in 1945. He then transferred to and graduated from Cathedral Latin where he met Agnes Keyes, his wife of 59 years. Continuing with football, he played a season at St. Andrews Jr. College. He moved his family to South Carolina where he lived primarily in Columbia and Lexington.
He was a family man. He had five children, thirteen grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren and counting. In the 1950s, he raced Modified/Sportsman Stock Cars in the precursor to NASCAR. He ran a theater company in Goldsboro, NC, and acted there and for other theaters. He was a pilot, crash-landed a plane in a cornfield, and walked away from it. He started his own business, Streeter Moving & Storage, and ran it for decades employing many over the years. He coached football and was a sideline photographer for the Gamecock football program and started what became the Fighting Gamecocks Forum for USC football fans. He ran a BBQ web page, was a certified BBQ judge, and a storyteller worthy of such a title. After Agnes had a series of strokes, he was her caregiver for several years. Late in life, he discovered long-lost family members and worked to create relationships with his newfound family.
A private ceremony will be held at a future date.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.caughmanlexington.com for the Streeter family.
