WEST COUMBIA - A celebration of the life of James W. Holton, Jr., 90, of West Columbia, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 12, 2015 at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 12, 2015 at the church. Memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church or a charity of one’s choice.
Mr. Holton was born September 24, 1924 in Detroit, MI and passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2015. He was the son of the late James W. Holton, Sr. and Winnie Corbin Holton. He spent a large portion of his childhood on his family’s farm near Bolton, NC where he enjoyed fishing and hunting, activities that he loved throughout his life. He graduated from Hallsboro High School in NC. He served in the Navy during WWII from 1942 to 1946. After the war Mr. Holton began a long and successful career in the newspaper profession. He worked briefly in Wilmington, NC before joining The State-Record Company in Columbia, SC. in 1948. During his career he rose through the ranks from advertising salesman to the position of Advertising Director/Assistant General Manager. He retired from Columbia Newspapers, Inc. in 1985. After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling around the world and relaxing at Lake Murray and Garden City Beach. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was an active member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church. He was involved in numerous professional and civic organizations, including the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Columbia Sales and Marketing Club, Newspaper Advertising Executives Association, United Way, Kiwanis Club, and Cayce-West Columbia Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Odom Holton; daughter, Janet Riddle (Pat) of Lexington; sons, Glenn Holton (Anna) of Lexington and Jim Kahl (Jean) of Milwaukee; five grandchildren, Shannon, Laura, Lauren, Victoria and Savannah; five great-grandchildren; a sister, June McKinney (Morgan) of Charlotte, NC; and his brother, Jack Holton (Nola) of Lake Mary, FL. He is predeceased by a sister, Ruth Weyers. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
