James Eugene Black, 85, of Pelion, passed away on Wednesday January 31, 2024. He was born on November 22, 1938 to the late Willie H. and Frances Catherine Long Black from Joanna, SC and his late stepmother, Evelyn Medlin Black. Foster son of the late Lonnie Carl and Emma Kyzer.
He was survived by his wife of 60 years, Wilba Jean Black; his children, Marty James and Janice (Daggerhart) Black, Reggie Lavern and Christy (Moss) Black; special niece and family, Shannon Baddley (Heath) Johnson; children, Dylan and Daisy of New Market, AL; siblings, Patricia Shumpert, Marie Bussey, Donnie Black Sr., John Barden and Katheryn Swain. He was predeceased by his brothers, Billy Black and Allen Kyzer.
James was first faithful to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Secondly, he was always faithful to his wife and family, always willing to help anyone who needed a helping hand. He had many hobbies including, hunting, fishing and most of all gardening. Helping his wife with the canning and freezing, he also enjoyed traveling the U.S. and Canada after he retired. He was an ordained deacon and held many positions in his local church, Florence Baptist Church. He retired after 25 years of service at Fort Jackson, SC. He received many service awards and personal letters for excellent service from the forts leading Commanders. Also nominated for Federal Employee of the Year in 1979. He also served in the Army National Guard for 9 years and 14 years as a volunteer with the Pelion Rescue Squad.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home – Lexington Chapel, 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM. A burial will take place at Oaklawn Cemetery following the service.
