Gordon Whitfield Harwell, 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 6, 2023. A South Carolina native, he was born in Columbia on August 25, 1942 to the late William Polo and Bessie Parker Harwell. Gordon retired from Pearce-Young-Angel (PYA) after 31 years. He continued working in the produce business for himself, as well as part-time for Senn Brothers Produce.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Sara, as well as his daughter Angela (Todd); his granddaughter, Madison Gates; his beloved furbaby, Luna; his sister-in-law, Felicia Sisk; extended family members, Sharon and Richard Mills and their family of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Gordon was the kind of man that every parent wants their son to grow up to be. He was loving, humble, caring, and so much more. He made sure that everyone around him felt loved, cared for, respected, and that their needs were not only heard, but met. The impact that he left on the people around him will not be shaken by his loss, but strengthened. Every day we should urge ourselves to be a little more like him; that’s how we make the world a better place.
The family would like to thank the Lexington Medical Center oncology staff for their care throughout his treatment. The family would also like to thank the numerous nurses on the 5th floor at Lexington Medical Center oncology but especially Sara Tronco, Sandra Munoz, Felicia King and Louise Coleman for their genuine love and care of Gordon. Even though he was having chemo treatments, they all made his time with them as pleasant as possible.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Caughman Harman Funeral Home, 503 N. Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072.
