PELION - George Lee Bessinger, 84, husband of the late Ellen Ayer Bessinger, died on Saturday, March 2, 2013. Mr. Bessinger was born to the late Joe Willie Bessinger and Nora Belle Dyches Bessinger on November 28, 1928 in Midway, FL.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Lewis Hampton, John Willie, Hattie Lucille and Mary Elizabeth. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Bessinger was a veteran of WWII having served with the US Army in Germany in 1951 – 1952.
In his earlier years he was employed as a surveyor, railroad worker and professional truck driver. He enjoyed Springfield Flea Market, his friends at Sugarbakers, old movies and wrestling. “Papa” deeply loved his 6 grandsons; 3 granddaughters and 12 great-granddaughters.
He is survived by his 4 daughters, Sue Ellen (Larry) Templeton of Pelion, Nora BeLinda (Jerry) Winn of Irmo, Cindy Peel of Columbia, Nora Williams of Lexington, dear family friend, Gary Wilson and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to his granddaughter, Bridget for her love, care and devotion.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 8, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Caughman- Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, 503 N. Lake Dr., Lexington SC 29072. A private military burial will be held at Hilda Southern Methodist Church, 228 Old Salem Road, Hilda, SC 29812.
