David was born on November 6, 1956 in Columbia, SC to the late John Young DuPré Sr. and Caroline Phillips DuPré. David was a 1975 graduate of A.C. Flora High School, and he went on to attend the University of South Carolina, where he graduated with a BS in Engineering in 1979 and later an MS of Electrical Engineering. He was a member and past president of Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society, a member of Eta Kappa Nu honor society, and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, as well as a member and proud supporter of VFW 6740 in Leesville, SC.
In his early years, David served as an EMS volunteer in Columbia, SC before starting his engineering career. He worked as a sales manager for Advanced Monolythic Ceramics and Johanson Dielectrics, and he worked briefly with Road Rescue in Marion, SC. Most recently, David celebrated 25 years with AVX/Kyocera, where he was a senior field applications engineer. In this position, he traveled the world, including some of his favorite countries, Japan, Ireland, and Belgium.
A lifelong engineer, David was always at work on one project or another, even at home. With his wife Marguerite, he designed their family home in Surfside, SC, where they lived for over 40 years. His final residence was his beloved Lake Murray cabin, which he also designed and built. David enjoyed boating with his family and loved fishing (even when the fish didn’t love him back). He took great pride in caring for his lawn and decorating his home for the holidays. In recent years, he often called himself a “commonsseur” of fine wine, and he enjoyed traveling with his wife and children to vineyards throughout California and South and North Carolina. He never met a stranger, and he could carry a conversation with anyone. David was a loving husband, father, and “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to VFW 6740 at 950 Rock N Creek Road in Leesville, SC 29070 or a charity of your choice.
