Claudia Williams Lown-Cope, 79, of Lexington, SC passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 with family by her side at a local hospital unexpectedly. She was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Lillian Williams; first husband, Grover Edison Lown, Jr.; husband, Lynn Cope; son, Dennis “Scott” Lown; brother, Kenneth Williams; sister, Pam Daly and stepdaughter-in-law, Hilary Cope.
Claudia was born April 5, 1943 in Florence, SC. She graduated from Irmo High School in 1961 where she met her first husband, Grover Edison Lown, Jr. They spent the next years raising their sons together. She was a loving wife and mother. In 1972, she graduated from Midlands Technical College. After graduation, she began working in the Department of Psychiatry at Baptist Medical Center in Columbia, SC. While working full time, she studied as a Gamecock at the University of South Carolina where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree. She continued her education and earned her Master’s degree in Social Work. She proudly worked for Baptist Medical Center for nearly 30 years, retiring in 2002.
In 2005, Claudia married Lynn Cope. Lynn unexpectedly passed shortly thereafter. The brief time they spent together shined a light in her heart that lasted the remainder of her days. Claudia will be buried alongside her husband, Lynn, at Dutch Fork Baptist Church Cemetery.
She spent her whole life devoted to family and friends and spending as much time as she could with them. From attending many family gatherings to day trips spent with grandchildren, she rarely missed an opportunity to be with those closest to her. Claudia’s hobbies included crocheting, sewing, macramé and other handcrafts. In retirement, she loved spending time in her flower garden, researching her family genealogy and spending time with her precious dog, Skippy.
As a wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, Nana, Dia, and friend to many, she will truly be missed by those who were blessed to be a part of her life. It is impossible to know the depths that her friendship and kindness had reached over the years, as Claudia never met a stranger. She was always willing to help anyone that had the opportunity to know her.
Claudia is survived by her son, Stephen Lown (Angela); daughter-in-law, Vickie Lown; stepson, Kyle Cope; sister, Darlene Cline (Dave); brother, Larry Williams (Mariam); her beloved 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends who all loved her dearly.
The memorial service will be held at 1 o’clock, on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at Dutch Fork Baptist Church, 3517 Dreher Shoals Road, Irmo, SC 29063. The family will receive friends at 12 o’clock prior to the memorial. A burial, open to all, will follow at Dutch Fork Baptist Church Cemetery.
