William J. Hill, Jr. William J. Hill, Jr, age 90, of Levittown, PA, passed away Monday, January 28, 2013 in his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Bill had been a Levittown resident for 60 years. He was an active member of St. Joseph The Worker Parish, including service as an Eucharistic Minister. Bill had dedicated his life to the progressive ideals of the Democratic party, especially within the labor movement. Professionally, he joined the Budd Red Lion Plant as a young machinist helping to build mass transit trains. He served on the UAW Committee Local 92 and was progressively elected into key leadership roles - including serving on the Committee of Eleven, as Shop Committeeperson, as first Vice-President and finally, for twelve years, as President of Local 92, serving the needs of all members. Bill had a heart-felt belief that labor's leadership should serve the cause of people - union and non-union members alike - to nourish the hopes and dreams of freedom, dignity and a better world. Bill was drafted right out of high school to join the minor-league Brooklyn Dodgers. Although a shoulder injury prevented him from furthering a career in baseball, Bill was the manager of the Babe Ruth Baseball League for several years. He was a life-long Phillies fan and loved attending hometown games. Bill's zest for living encompassed many hobbies and interests, including ballroom dancing, gardening, fishing, theater and reading. Bill was a member of The Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society, Single Parents Association, Bass Masters, AFL-CIO and the ACLU. Beloved husband of the late Mary T. Hill. Bill is the loving father of Dolores McGuigan of Levittown, PA, Teresa Hamm of Langhorne, PA and Bernadette Hill-Schmelder of Lancaster, PA. He is the proud grandfather of eight and also a great-grandfather of nine. He is also survived by his sisters, Sarah Sweeney, Betty Kindermann, wife of Robert Kindermann and Joan Downie. Bill is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a grandson, Michael S. Dissinger and two sisters, Mary T. Diller and Jane Jaconski. Relatives, friends and members of Local 92 UAW are invited to call on Friday, from 6:00 until 9:00 pm and from 9:00 until 10:00 am on Saturday, at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Saturday at Saint Joseph the Worker Church, Fallsington followed by Rite of Committal in Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem. In lieu of flowers, Bill's family has asked that memorial donations be made to Fox Chase Cancer Center, 333 Cottman Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111.
