George M. Gillen of Levittown passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at his home. He was 84. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Mr. Gillen was a graduate of Girard College and obtained his Master's degree from Temple University. In 1944, George went to work for the former Stokes Company, where he met his future wife, Mary Hoffman. Mr. Gillen worked as a teacher in the Philadelphia School District for over 20 years, mainly at Pickett Middle School in Germantown where he taught mathematics and industrial arts. He retired in 1985 and continued to work at Woods School as a security guard. He was a member of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers. He was also a member of All Saints Episcopal Church of Fallsington. Mr. Gillen was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korea. He truly enjoyed the times he spent with his family. Mr. Gillen was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Hoffman) Gillen and father of the late Lisa Murray and George Michael Gillen. He is survived by his loving children, Margaret Jane Ritz and her husband, Michael, of York, Pa., Thomas F. Gillen of Langhorne, Gardner J. Gillen and his wife, Janice, of Sewell, N.J. and Andrew M. Gillen and his wife, Leanne D., of Langhorne. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Jessica Jane Berkmire, Page T., Adam M., Sean M. and Tyler A. Gillen, Brian P. and Nicholas J. Giordano, and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Rd., Levittown. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at All Saints Episcopal Church followed by interment in East Cedar Hill Cemetery.
