She was born October 15, 1924 in Caldwell County to Margaret Viola Pearson and Bealer Aaron Bolick. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John Wesley Melton.
She was a native and longtime resident of Lenoir and a graduate of Lenoir High School. Mavis taught at St. Francis Kindergarten and Lenoir Community Kindergarten, where her love of children was evident. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lenoir. There she sang in the choir, served on the United Methodist Women’s Organization, and taught Sunday school.
She is survived by two sons, John Randolph Melton of Greensboro and Douglas Wayne Melton of Durham and one daughter, Jacqueline Melton Lawing of Matthews. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Jason Daniel Lawing of Cary, Janet Melton Lundeen of Charlotte, and Kelly Lawing Gallo of Charlotte. In addition, she is survived by three great-grandchildren, Hunter James Gallo, John Camden Lundeen and Ainsley Rose Lundeen.
A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Melton will be held Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lenoir. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM at the church.
