Luba “Lou” Kuzmich Smith, 92, of Lenoir passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012. A native of Newark, New Jersey, she was born on July 24, 1919 to Paula and Alexander Kuzmich. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother John Krelick and her sister Mary Clinchot and her beloved husband Thomas Andrew Smith.
Lou married Tom in 1942 and came to live in Lenoir after WWII. She was a licensed practical nurse and did private duty nursing for several years but she spent 30 years working for the Caldwell County Cooperative Extension Service and she grew to think of Lenoir as her heart home.
Lou is survived by her sons, Michael Smith of Sylva and his wife Brenda, Dennis Smith and his wife Sandra of Lenoir and her daughter Sandy Smith of Shelby. She is also survived by three adored grandchildren, Alex Smith and wife Laura, Justin Smith and wife Nichole and Sarah Nester and husband Josh and five great grandchildren, Carter and Kendall Smith, Caiden and Jensen Smith and Scarlett Nester.
A funeral service will be held Friday, January 6, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with Reverend Jamie Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
The family respectfully requests that memorials be made to the St. Jude’s Children Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the First United Methodist Church of Lenoir, Building Fund, 309 Church Street NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.
A warm-hearted thank you is extended to all the staff at Grandview Villa who took special care of Lou these last few years.
