The daughter of Robert and Bessie Nichols, she was born on March 19, 1937 in Washington, D.C. where she attended Dunbar High School. She chose the path of Education as her major at Howard University (Black Man’s Harvard), it was here that she met William H. Smith, Jr. and later married him.
Military life placed the couple in Wiesbaden, Germany where their first son William H. Smith III, was born. Later, they were transferred to Nellis Air Force Base, where she taught at Lomie Gray Heard Elementary and her second son, Robert D. Smith, was later born.
Momma Smith lived a large part of her life in Las Vegas, Nevada as a school teacher for the Clark County School District. She truly had a passion for educating young minds in history and science. She enjoyed science projects, including one that generated electricity from a lemon and battery. After dedicating 36 years to educating young lives from Kindergarten to sixth grade, she retired and spent most her time traveling to places such as Mexico, Alaska, and many destinations throughout the United States. Her refrigerator door was a massive collection of magnets collected during her travels.
She relocated to Dallas, Texas during September 2015 to enjoy her final days at the Lexington Place Retirement Home. She will be remembered for her witty humor, which kept the nursing staff amused on any given day. Those who came in contact with Yvonne often spoke of her pleasant smile and warm demeanor.
Yvonne will be truly missed, she is survived by two sons: William H Smith III of Las Vegas, NV; Robert Smith (Donna) of Dallas, TX; one Grandchild: Brandon Gailliard (Miriam) of Dallas, TX; one Great Grandchild: Alexandra Rose Gailliard of Dallas, TX along with a host of loving friends.
