As a youth, William was active in his church, sports and boy scouts. He graduated from Carrol High School in 1964. He attended and graduated from Grambling State University in 1969 majoring in Business Administration.
In 1973, upon moving to Las Vegas, he joined First African Methodist Episcopal Church. He served as a church officer, Lay Organization president, choir member, Sons of Allen member and Sunday school teacher.
He was employed by the State of Nevada for many years. He worked as a lead investigator, a conciliator and was appointed by the Nevada governor to lead the Nevada Equal Rights Commission as its administrator. He retired in 2001.
Although retired, he remained passionate about his Lord, family, church, Grambling, the New Orleans Saints, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
We loved him but God loved him best.
He leaves to mourn, his wife of forty two years, Mary; his three children William Stewart Jr., Robyn Stewart, and Crystal Stewart; grandchildren Shiena Stewart, Robyn Stewart, Eboni Elliott, Jasmine Jones and Antonio Stewart; great-grandchildren Aleeyah Stewart, Taylor Heckard, Amari Elliott, Aalijah Elliott, Adarian Elliott, Kennedie Jones, Kaylei Jones, Lee Andrew Jones Jr. and Austin Stewart; brother Joel Harris; as well as many other loving relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 17, 2018 at 11:00am at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church, 2446 Revere St., NLV, NV 89030.
