Born in Las Vegas on October 23, 1951, he was the first child baptized in the nascent St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Las Vegas.
A graduate of Las Vegas High School, he received a degree in Sociology from Arizona State University. He went on to the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts to earn a Masters of Divinity degree in 1977.
He then moved to Southern California, and after a brief period working in the aerospace industry, he became the assistant priest at Saint Sophia Cathedral in Los Angeles, California.
He later moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he studied under the spiritual guidance of Father James Talarides before returning to his native Las Vegas in 2003.
He went to work for Bonanza Beverage Company and continued to work with Father John Hondros at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, standing in as needed.
Father Basil is survived by his nephews, Bill and Steve Gialketsis, and his niece, Julie Gialketsis.
A funeral service for Father Basil will be held Friday, October 7, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 5300 El Camino Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89118. Following the funeral service will be a committal service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Palm Eastern Cemetery, 7600 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89123.
