Susannah Rachel “Susie” Gelbart, 54, of Las Vegas, passed away September 22, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a retired elementary school teacher who worked in public schools in Los Angeles, Arizona and Las Vegas for more than 20 years. Teaching was her joy and her love, along with saving the habitats of many different animals. For much of her adult life, she devoted herself to increasing awareness of animal welfare and environmental causes.
She graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1993 with a degree in education. She was an excellent photographer and was an extremely thoughtful daughter, sister and aunt. Susie devoted herself to caring for her father the last several years. Susie had a heart of gold and will be dearly missed by her large and loving family.
She is survived by her father, David Gelbart, of Las Vegas; sisters Tammy Jaffe of Roanoke, Va.; Deborah (Ray) Veach of Las Vegas; and Rabbi Michelle (Jeff) Goldsmith of Coral Springs, Fla.; and brothers Steven (Debra) of Phoenix; Daniel (Wendy) of Las Vegas; and Joshua (April) of Monroe, Wa. She was preceded in death by her mother, Elaine Gelbart, in 2011. She is also survived by 16 nieces and nephews, three great-nieces and one great-nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at King David Memorial Chapel, 2697 E Eldorado Lane in Las Vegas. Contributions in her memory may be made to NRDC, Earth Justice or Free the Oceans or to a charity of your choice that is committed to protecting animals, sea life or the environment.
