Richard was an Airman Third Class of the US Airforce where he served with the 4238th Field Maintenance Squadron, he served as an officer on the Stark County Deputy Sherriff’s Department, and was an avid sports fan and athlete.
On April 6, 1989, he was among the first enshrines by Greater Stark County Fumbleball Association into the Amateur Sports Hall of Fame located in Canton, Ohio. In addition to this honor, Richard won many awards in fumbleball, softball, and bowling. He was known as the “homerun king” often tagging the ball out of the park right when the team needed it for the win. This is where he got the nickname “Zeke”. He could play any position with ease but was most know for his mean fast pitch and ability to run like the wind. This passion for sports he passed on to the little league teams his son played on and then for a local high school girls basketball team as a volunteer coach.
Not only did Richard enjoy his sports as a pastime, he was always ready to help. Every year he volunteered his time with Toys for Tots Stark County helping to collect toys for children in need. Richard was wealthy in all the ways that matter. He never met a stranger and would help anyone at any time, always. One could say that he was a “give you the shirt of his back” kind of guy.
After his beloved wife Ilene’s passing on March 21, 2016, Richard moved to Las Vegas to live with his youngest daughter, Daphne Davis and her family. There he joined the senior’s only softball team and continued his favorite pastime…. softball.
Now he joins his one and only love, Ilene Mae Harris, in heaven.
RIP, Dad, you will be missed by all who knew you.
