Penny Jean Margaret Meldrum was born on December 2, 1952 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada to Robert and Julianna Banks. Penny was the 4th of 8 children in the Banks family and she grew up surrounded by the chaos and fun of a large family.
Penny was one of those elect ladies who loved life and loved people. She always had a way of making people feel good about themselves. She loved to serve others – whether is was in a church calling with the Relief Society, Young Women’s, the Primary children, the Addiction Recovery Program or simply calling someone she thought needed to talk and have their burdens lifted as she shared her wisdom about life. Her laugh was infectious and it could be heard frequently at any gathering.
Penny met the love of her life, Brad in July 1971. They worked together at A&W and spent hundreds of hours talking and laughing prior to their marriage 6 weeks later on August 27, 1971. Their 49 ½ years of marriage was filled with love and happiness as they welcomed two wonderful daughters into their lives – Tracey born in January 1972 and Karri born in September 1973. As a family they loved to travel and took many camping trips across Canada and United States. After Penny’s cancer diagnosis in 2003, Brad and Penny travelled the world together.
Penny was a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer at the age of 50. After surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy the doctors told her she would probably not be alive by the time she reached age 52. However, Penny was a fighter and she knew better, surviving to age 68 and the cancer never returned. She always said that experience made her appreciate every “extra” day she had to live.
Penny was an organizational guru at home but also leading groups of people to get things done. She thought of everything that was needed and plans were always complete.
Penny is survived by her husband Bradford Meldrum, her daughters Tracey Moncrieff (Steve) and Karri Meldrum (Emilee) as well as 5 grandchildren, Kaitlynn Dykman (Spencer), Parker Krueger, Hayden Krueger, Jared Moncrieff and Emily Moncrieff plus the love of her life Eleanor Dykman, her great granddaughter. Penny came from a large family and is survived by Sydney Banks (Gail), Lori Dewar (Peter), Terry Banks (Alice) and Douglas Banks. She is predeceased by her parents Robert Clifford Banks and Julianna Neisz as well as her brothers Barrie Banks (Carol), Randall Banks (Marion) and her sister Cindy Olsen.
