Miguel “Mike” Alvarez passed away peacefully on September 5, 2020 after a long battle with prostate cancer. Mike was born on July 23, 1944 in Havana, Cuba and came to America when he was 17 years old. During his younger years, he enjoyed playing softball, bowling, and fishing. In his later years he loved going out to lunch and he always appreciated good service.
Mike was a man who was set in his ways and reluctant to change his daily routine in any way. He would stop to say his daily prayers at Guardian Angel Cathedral Church every day on his way to work. He also attended mass on his days off and every Sunday before work. He was a casino dice dealer with an incredibly strong work ethic for more than 50 years. He worked at The Horseshoe, Las Vegas Hilton, and Caesars Palace.
Mike is preceded in death by his loving wife Jewel “Julie” Alvarez; daughter Gail Schaus; and grandson Trevor P. Schaus.
Mike is survived by his son Curtis “Kirk” Thompson; daughter Yvonne Koch; son-in-law Charles Koch; grandson Michael Schaus; grandson Matthew Thompson; and granddaughter Julian Thompson. Mike is also survived by his great-grandchildren; Madisyn Schaus, Masen Schaus, Alisa Schaus Melvin, Trevor P. Schaus Jr., Jacob Schaus, Jessie Schaus, Kai Scott-Thompson; and three great-grandchildren Kamren Melvin, Lucas Melvin and Trevor P. Schaus III.
Services will be private due to the safety concerns of the Coronavirus.
