Michael Mavros passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, Saturday, March 18, 2017. Michael was born on November 18, 1944, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the eldest child of Alexander and Evangeline Mavros (née Mackris).
His family relocated to Los Angeles, California in the late 1950's, where he graduated from Dorsey High School and then attended Los Angeles City College. Michael married the love of his life, Debbie Psihountas, in 1969. Michael worked at the Century Plaza as Food and Beverage Purchasing Agent. In 1973, he moved his family to Las Vegas to open the original MGM Grand Hotel and Casino as Food and Beverage Purchasing Agent and became the Director of Purchasing in 1975. He was also International President of IFSEA. He was very active with St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, where he served on the Building Committee, was Parish Council President, served on the Diocesan Council and was Chairman of several early Greek Food Festivals held at the Sahara Space Center. Michael was instrumental in acquiring the land where St. John sits today. All of Michael's grandparents were born on the island of Crete. He was so proud of his heritage that he helped start the Pan Cretan Chapter in Las Vegas in the late 1970's. He loved and cherished his family beyond anything in the world and the love that he had for his family and friends was unconditional. His legacy lives on through his family and the people whose lives he impacted. He will be greatly missed and always remembered by so many whose lives he deeply touched.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Alexander.
Michael is survived by his wife, Debbie; daughter, Elaine Bucy; son-in-law, Brent; granddaughters, Alexandria and Brianna; son, Alex; daughter-in-law, Jen (née Clark); brother, John, and his wife, Melanie; sister, Mary Abrams and her husband, Bernard; mother, Evangeline; and many nieces, nephews and Godchildren.
A viewing will be held from 4:00 – 5:00pm on Friday, March 24, with prayer service following. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, March 25. All services will be held at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 5300 El Camino Road, Las Vegas, NV 89118; burial following at Palm Valley View Memorial Park, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89123.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made in Michael's name to St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church.
