Mary C. Crosby

Mary Christine Rinderle Shappie Crosby graduated from this life with honors on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at her home in Mona, Utah. She was born on October 11, 1920 to Henry Rinderle and Clara Steinke in St. Henry, Ohio. She was the youngest of nine children. At the age of two, she lost her mother and at the age of five, she lost her father. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, John and Anna Rindler. She was educated in a one room school house in Cranberry, Ohio. In May of 1939, she met Delbert Joseph Shappie and they were married on June 1st, 1939. They had four children; Frank, Doris, Larry, and Betty Lou. In the early 50’s, they moved from Ohio to the west coast. She lived for a short time in Oregon, then in Culver City, California and Santa Monica, California. She worked alongside Delbert, who was a tool and die maker, for many years. In the mid 60’s, they grew tired of the city life and moved to the California, Nevada desert and lived in a two room cabin that they had built. After Del passed away in 1972, Mary moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. There she met James Crosby. They were married and lived there for several years. When Jim passed away, Mary moved to Searchlight, Nevada, where she lived until 2005. At that time, she moved to Mona, Utah to live with her daughter Betty Lou and Betty’s husband Dale.

Mary had many interests and talents. She loved to sing older songs ranging from “Bicycle Built for Two” to “Maggie Dear”. She was very accomplished at playing the harmonica, and her favorite song was “Home Sweet Home”. She enjoyed embroidering and making baby “teddy bear” quilts for all of her gandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren until her hands wore out. She was an avid collector of teddy bears and had hundreds in her possession. But her most important talent was loving people. She had a hard time passing by anyone without giving them a hug.

Mary was preceeded in death by her parents; seven brothers and one sister; her son, Frank; daughter, Doris Fields; granddaughter, Renee Fields; grandson, Jason Shappie; and grandson-in-law, Jeremy Cobb. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Ida Shappie of Los Angeles, California; son, Larry and his wife Michelle of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Betty Lou and her husband Dale Garlick of Mona, Utah; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Although she will be missed by so many of us left here, she is truly having a joyous reunion with those who have been waiting for her on the other side.
