Mary Hellen Burke was born on January 7, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois. She was the only child born to Alex Owens and Zadie Bowen. As a young adult, Mary Hellen began her career as a typist and executive assistant. She soon met the love of her life, Richard Elgin Burke, Sr., who she was happily married to for almost 46 years, until death parted them. One son, Richard Jr., was born to their union. Mary Hellen returned to school, received her master’s in education, and joined the Chicago Board of Education working as a teacher for many years before retiring. During her lifetime, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and friend. In addition to her son, she leaves to mourn her: a daughter-in-law, Joanne a.k.a “JoJo”, step grandson, P.J. a.k.a “Twinkle”, her dearest granddaughter, Raven a.k.a. “Sweetgirl”, a grandson-in-law, Shawn a.k.a. “Superman”, nieces, nephews, and all those extended family members and friends for whom she’ll forever be “Grandma”. She loved being social, joining church groups, book clubs, and the “Chicago Connection of Las Vegas”, where many friends were made and each will miss her. Mary Hellen had a way of making true friendships; wherever she lived soon the neighbors were her friends. Over the years, those who worked with her, went to church with her, or were friends of her family members, soon became fond of her. She was a mom, grand mom, or friend to anybody who needed one, and her loving spirit, laugh, and smile warmed every room. Mary Hellen was a lover of Christ and was ready to be home with her Lord and her “Poppy”; she left this world in that spirit. We love you so much grandma and already miss you dearly, but we know God loves you best. Our beloved, Mom and Grandma. Rest in Peace. Your family and host of friends
