Lucas N. Hernandez, 89, formerly of Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Kindred Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. He was born on October 24, 1923 in Loving, New Mexico, son of the late Francisco Navarro and Delores Hernandez. Lucas served proudly in the United States Army during WWII. Upon his return from serving in the U.S. Army, Lucas married and began working for the City of Carlsbad Water Department where he worked as a foreman for 44 years. He loved to travel and most recently traveled to Rome, Italy to meet and greet the Pope. Lucas was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Ester Tarin Hernandez; son in-law Ray Allen Courtney; grandson Ray Allen Courtney Jr.; and granddaughter Nicole Courtney. Lucas Hernandez was a devoted brother of surviving sister Marcela Navarro Hernandez of Carlsbad, New Mexico, and sister-in-law Consuelo Garcia of California. He will be deeply missed by his surviving family: daughter Carmen T. H. Courtney; daughter Virginia T. Hernandez; daughter Rachael T.H. Bernal; daughter Sylvia T.H. Lopez; son-in-law Armando Lopez; eight grandchildren Bianca Morris, Allegra Steinberg, Jose Lucas Garcia, John Michael Bernal, Aubrey Bernal, Armando H. Lopez III, Aazena Bernal, and Aabella Bernal; and six wonderful and beautiful great-grandchildren.
