Jonathan Andrew Buchanan

November 27, 1967 – December 2, 2022

Growing up, friends and family called him “Andy.” When he entered college, he quit fighting roll call and started going by “Jonathan.” Regardless of what you called him, Andy had a way of putting people at ease and making them laugh, even during the darkest of times.

Andy was born into a family of hard-working men and women – members of the military, police, medical, insurance and ministry, as well as avid trappers, hunters and fishers. Though he moved frequently through his elementary years, he was proud of his ROTC record in high school before he settled in the Modesto, California area to finish his high school career. Andy was offered appointments at the military academies; however, he attended Fresno State University and pursued a business degree, eventually going to work for Temple Inland, Inc., and then James Distributing, which became Surveillance Technologies, the position which led his foray into the surveillance and security industry.

Andy had three beautiful children with his first wife, Marni Hershey: Rebecca, Rachel and Paul. Andy adored his children and grandchildren and cherished every moment spent with them. Andy and Marni ran Surveillance Technologies in Fresno, California and eventually opened a second office in Las Vegas until 2005. In 2006, Andy married his high school sweetheart, Cyndie Stewart, and together they started Diamond Digital, LLC. The business grew out of their garage from a small digital video surveillance company to a team of professional surveillance, access control and intrusion detection specialists. Andy was proud of the Diamond Digital family and their commitment to both their customers and colleagues in the industry.

Andy inherited his passion for vehicles early. Andy played bass for 35 years before his neighbor’s dog bit part of his ring finger off. This led to his new hobby of “doing sketchy stuff” in his Jeep Rubicon. He loved sharing those experiences with family and friends, taking them to see gorgeous areas of nature they would never have seen otherwise. Andy had quite the reputation for breaking his Jeep on the first day of annual trips with Warmachines 702, but never let it stop him from attempting every obstacle.

Andy’s quiet faith was a unique one. Never adversarial or confrontational, Andy’s habit of coming alongside family, friends and colleagues to encourage, mentor and advise always included a reminder to cultivate a relationship with God rather than focus on the issues of “religion.” He was honest about his faults and shortcomings but seemed to bring the best out in others. We are confident that Andy is with his Savior and with family and friends who have gone before, including the members of the Buchanan and Julson clans who loved so fiercely that their hearts gave out.

Andy is survived by his wife of 16 years, Cyndie Stewart Buchanan, his daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Daniel Killough, his daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Jon Passmore, his son and fiancé, Paul Buchanan and Maria Sorensen, two grandchildren, Torin Killough and Casey Killough, and his mother, Dorothy Julson-Alley.

Andy joins his father, Donald B. Buchanan, and his brother, Douglas Scott Buchanan, along with his grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins in a place where he can finally discuss questions he had no answers to here on earth. We can only imagine the trouble he will be causing and the laughter that will forever ring out. The void he leaves will not be filled. Andy will be missed every day of our lives.

Andy’s Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Shadow Hills Church - Summerlin Campus, 7811 Vegas Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada 89128. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the Fellowship Center.
