John Jessie McCormick was born on December 14, 1938 in Geneva County, Alabama to George W. McCormick and Ruth L. Pouncey. He was the youngest of three children. He worked for the City of Los Angeles for over thirty years from which he retired. Later, he relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada. He accepted Christ at an early age. As an adult he became an active church member of Greater Community Missionary Baptist Church in Pacoima, California where he served as a deacon and later at Second Baptist Church in Las Vegas, Nevada where he served as a deacon and trustee.
John McCormick passed away Sunday, September, 25, 2011 after a lengthy illness.
John McCormick was awarded the National Laymen’s John L. Webb, Laymen of the Year award in 2008. He was very instrumental in the Katrina Relief efforts where he recruited men from the Las Vegas area and made several trips to New Orleans as state laymen president.
He is preceded in death by his son Andre McCormick; two sisters, Bessie Ruth Rowe and Corine McCormick Bess.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Helen McCormick, 5 children: Paula Mumphrey, Johnny Sewell, Barbara Hall, Keith McCormick, and Lisa Glionna, eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one aunt, Wilma Reynolds and a host of nieces , nephews, and cousins along with a beloved church member family.
Visitation will be held at Palm Cheyenne Mortuary,7400 W. Cheyenne Avenue, Las Vegas, NV, Friday, September 30, 2011, 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
