Our Families-Our Friends today! Here we are having the privileged to have spent our entire lives knowing and having Jerome (known as “Koki-JMO and Scissors Jack”) as our brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Jerome Mosley, a lifelong resident of Las Vegas, Nevada; passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2019. He was 70 years. Jerome was born on October 2, 1948, the first of three siblings to Hugh and Alma Mosley in Las Vegas. Jerome, as a teenager, was raised and baptized as one of Jehovah Witnesses. He often recalled his grandmother; Felicia Marks started a family heritage. She used her house for the first meeting place for Jehovah’s Witnesses. Some recall his strong booming voice when reading his assignment at the Theocratic Ministry School which brought him joy to know after a bible reading. It also brought him joy that four of his children are following the steps of their great grandmother by serving where the need is greater in the Christian congregation of Jehovah’s Witness.
Jerome received his early childhood education and graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1966. During his high school years, he was remarkable for running track and field where he won state champion in the 880 yard run and voted as State of Nevada’s “Mr. Track” and later coached and mentored his cousin Yvette Gonzaque and many others who won the national championship under his direction. He went to and completed Carpentry of Apprentice Union 1089 in Phoenix, Arizona, and more recently began building small dog houses as a hobby (of course he sold them.) He also attended the Southern Arizona Barber College in 1968 and later he attended School of Cosmetology thus teaching cosmetology in Sanford, Florida.
Jerome wed in 1967 and together with his former wife; they shared four children. He later then married Delores Mungen Mosley in June of 1973; they were married 45 years. He deeply respected her. Jerome and Delores together shared all nine (9) children: Jerome Mosley Jr of Phoenix, Arizona; Julia Faye Mosley and Michael James Mosley of Las Vegas, Nevada; Rochelle Alexander Mosley-Arias of Warner Robins, Georgia; Lafayette Lanier Mosley; Alvin Lamour Mosley, who preceded in death in 1998; Marvin L. Mosley and Dominique Mosley of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Calderon Mosley of Washington, DC, son of Cecelia Chapman known as (CC).
Jerome was a visionary. He worked very hard as a barber in Florida and Las Vegas for over 50 years. He was known well at the Moulin Rouge and Hair Unlimited barber shops. He also learned carpentry as a side trade throughout his life. In 1974-1979, he developed and build homes in support of his family and in 1977 and 1992, he ventured out on his own as an successful entrepreneur by building a round dome known as (Black Hair 2001 on MLK BLVD), a unique hair salon and a catch phrase “Discover the World Beyond Black Hair 2001” He was famous for his $20.01 Jheri curls. This instantly caught the attention of so many in the Westside Community and surely he undoubtedly helped employ those who wanted to be motivated by his practical knowledge.
Then the name “JMO” was also best known by his family members, friends, business acquaintances and customers. In 2006, Jerome ventured another business opportunity by opening a haircutting shop called “Scissor Jack” as his customer called him “Jack” because the name “Jack” in large print appeared on the front door of the business thus adopting the name. Although, many alias, we can best say that his character and motivation in life did not change his character. He always had a “Next Plan” a motivation that kept his mind constantly generating day after day.
FAMILY TIES
All of us can agree that living with the memories of Jerome Mosley is something to be remembered. Surely everyone one has a short or a lengthy story. Families’ ties were so important to him. He enjoyed spending time talking sports with his brothers Hugh and Leland. His favored his Aunt Eleanor Sue who nicked named him Koki when we he was little boy. It started with Coco because he had the most smoothest dark skin growing up then the name “Koki” that stuck with the remaining of the family.
Jerome grew up 8 years before the birth of his brothers so family was very important to him and he cherished them deeply. He viewed all of first cousins Billy and Benny Larry Mosley of California; Brenda; Jathery; Bubba; Ronnie; Felicia; Christopher and Michelle as an extension to his siblings. They all grew up together. His Aunts Juanita; Annie Ruth; Uncle Marshall and Robert were also viewed as extension mothers and fathers to him. He appreciated them dearly mainly because he enjoyed large families.
Jerome Mosley is survived by two brothers and a sister: Hugh T Mosley and Leland .B Mosley of Las Vegas, Nevada and Virginia Ann Mosley-Scott of Kansas City; two daughter’s in-law Andrea Mosley and Melissa Mosley; and name-sake daughter Monica Mosley who wasn’t his daughter but loved her the same; 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
