Janet was born in Amsterdam, New York, to Herbert Peck and Jesse Mahl on March 13, 1942. She graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School in 1960 and from State University of New York at Oswego with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1964. She married her longtime friend, Richard H. Hughes, on July 25, 1964, at a small church in Amsterdam, New York. Military life took them to Arizona, Germany, Texas, and Virginia before settling in Las Vegas, Nevada for good in 1977.
Janet was a full-time mom before returning to teaching in 1979. She taught elementary school for over 20 years in the Clark County School District and earned her master’s degree along the way. She was an amazing seamstress, knitter, and crocheter who loved participating in many local craft shows over the years. She loved baseball (NY Yankees), hockey (Vegas Golden Knights), and hanging out with her special people at the Draft House. She always looked forward to yearly trips to the Outer Banks, North Carolina and to the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York to visit dear friends. She treasured her time spent with family as well.
Janet is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Richard H. Hughes; her brother, Wilbur Peck; and brother-in-law, Jack Hughes.
Janet is survived by her daughter Dawn Hughes, son Scott Hughes, grandson Jorden Prins, sister-in-law Terry Rogers, nephew Michael Peck (Patti), nephew Gary Peck (Mindi), along with her great and great-great nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friends. She will be forever missed, loved, and never forgotten as her generous and loving spirit has touched us all.
