James Michael McGroarty of Las Vegas Nevada passed away May 4, 2023. He was born in Los Angeles, California June 30, 1945, to Ruth and James McGroarty. Brought to Las Vegas at the age of five, he attended St. Joseph's and St Anne's. In 1963, he graduated from Bishop Gorman High School. College was begun at USC but interrupted by some of the worst years of the Vietnam War. He served as a Sergeant in the US Army, 101st Airborne Division, where he was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor. Upon return, he earned a BA from USC and a JD from the Southwestern School of Law. He practiced law as a Deputy District Attorney and as an Appeals Officer with the NV Department of Administration. For over thirty years, Michael was in private practice in the field of workers' compensation, retiring in 2013.
Michael married Melodye Galliher in May 1984 and they raised two sons, James and Matthew. For nearly thirty years, Michael and his family lived in Mt Charleston where he served on the Town Board, Volunteer Fire Department, and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Volunteers. Michael was a lifetime member of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ruth, and his older brother Judge John S. McGroarty. He is survived by his wife Melodye and his sons, James Michael and Matthew Stephen (Amy), siblings Mary Thomas and Patrick, nephews J. R. McGroarty (Katie) and Kyle Moore; and nieces Taylor Moore, Erina Savage-Yell (Steve), Brianne McGroarty-Holmes (Victor), and Meghan McGroarty and their families.
Funeral Mass will be held at St Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Las Vegas at 11:00 am, Thursday May 25, with viewing and reminiscences at Palm Eastern Mortuary from 1:00 pm to the burial at 3:00 pm.
