My dad, James Leslie LaComb was a caring father, loving husband and great friend to many. He was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin on June 26, 1945. He was the oldest of three siblings, his sister Lynette Ratcliffe & brother Richard LaComb.
Dad met my mother Candice Adele Alton at the North Las Vegas airport where she worked. Dad would go there for any reasons just to be near her. They were married on January 16, 1990 and stayed together to the end. His love for her was deeply and strong, like no other.
In 1963, my dad joined the United States Marine Corps where he began his military career as a Private E-1 and quickly moved through the ranks to become Sargent E-5. During the service to his country, he was honored with the prestigious Purple Heart along with other military medals like the Vietnam Service Medal (W/2*); The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal along with the Marine Corps Good conduct Medal. He completed his military tour in 1969.
Dad worked at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino from 1998 to 2014 holding many positions and retiring as a Central Plant Facilities Manager. He was part of the team involved in transforming the Las Vegas strip to where it is today. He remained close to many of his work associates and friends who were also family to him.
My dad loved sports and was a baseball nut, he gave the bug to me and we both loved baseball together. Whenever he would get home from work, instead of acting burned out and tired, he would be full of energy, pumping us up and ready to drive the family to whatever baseball tournament was on the schedule. We got to enjoy a lot of games together and I am so thankful for all those memories. Not all dads want to play catch with their kids after working all day, but my dad always looked forward to spending time with me.
I remember when we went to Cooperstown, NY for one of my baseball tournaments. It was such a great experience for me as a kid. One of the most special memories I have was when my parents and I traveled to San Francisco to see a baseball game in Oakland with my mom’s sister, my Aunt Penny. It was my 16th birthday and as a surprise, on the way home, my parents took me to a second baseball game at Anaheim Stadium to see the Angels play.
I know teenagers can be a bit challenging, especially a teenage boy. As I will be a father soon myself. I always felt my dad’s love and support growing up, no matter what my choices were. Now that it’s my turn to be a dad, I will do my best to honor his memory and be the best dad and husband. I know he’ll be with me to watch over me and my family guiding us along the way.
Services will be held: April 5th, 2019 Palm Mortuary North 6701 N. Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, Nevada 89131
