Henry Clifton Fairfax, 79, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2020. He was born to the late Dorothy Elizabeth Fairfax and Budd Alexander, Jr. on September 16, 1941 in Washington, D.C. Henry went by two nicknames, “Butch” and “Hank.” He liked to tell the story of how his daughter called him “Butch” and he replied, “No, I’m daddy,” and she responded, “Okay, Butch.”
As a youth, he worked a newspaper route so that he was never without money in his pockets. He was known for being a sharp dresser and throwing fun parties. He attended D.C. public schools and after graduating from high school, he spent 2 years in the U.S. Army. From there, he married Cornelia Fairfax, and had a daughter, Jennifer. After retiring from the federal government, he remarried and moved to Henderson, Nevada. He later worked as a crossing guard and was affectionately known as “Mr. Hank.”
Henry loved good food, travelling and meeting people. For many years, he organized weekend and vacation bus tours. He remained a diehard Washington Football fan despite moving across the country and decorated one of his guest bedrooms with sports memorabilia décor.
His smile was as charming as his personality. You never knew when you were going to receive a surprise gift. He was never mean, vengeful or yelled. He always tried to make family and friends comfortable.
Over the years, he sponsored children in the hopes of them overcoming poverty and encouraged them to continue their education.
He was a loyal member of The American Legion, The Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include a daughter from his first marriage, Jennifer Fairfax, of Riverdale, MD, a grandson, Nicholas Spicer of Riverdale, MD.; cousins, Mitzi M. Johnson, of Los Angeles, CA and Shannon C. Eskridge of Sandusky, OH.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Willie M. Fairfax.
