Douglas A. Miller, M.D., born June 19, 1934 in Columbus, Ohio passed away August 25, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Douglas is survived by his loving wife, Bunny Miller; sons: Stephen H. and Daniel Miller; daughter, Leslie Miller Fitzpatrick; grandchildren: Shane, Kendall, Christian and Luke Fitzpatrick; and Claudia, Aurelia and Georgia Miller.
Doug was an eight year alumni of the Ohio State University, and was an extremely enthusiastic fan of The "Buckeyes". He proudly served in the United States Navy Medical Corp and retired as a Commander.
A diverse man who had many interests; Doug was a member of the American Legion, and the Military Officers Association of America. Writing was his passion and he enjoyed belonging to the Summerlin Writers and Poets’ Workshop.
All who knew him, mourn the loss of a wonderful man. He enriched so many lives with his dedication as a physician, love of his family, and loyalty to his friends. Doug always kept us laughing - we all will miss him.
Doug will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
The following Poem was one of his latest works that is soon to be published in the book “This Time Around”, an anthology of contemporary poetry:
The Cookie
We spend all of our days striving and coping;
Years pass and we keep waiting and hoping
For Life to give us a “cookie”
The ideal job, that one great romance,
The lottery if we take the chance.
Fame and fortune would sure be great,
And art works to accumulate.
To be able someday to retire where all those lonely palm trees are,
But destiny won’t take is higher; we’ve got an empty cookie jar.
Then, no matter how much we’ve been given,
We realize we’ll keep on livin’
With or without the cookie…
But then the 'Big Baker' says, "Lookie, you foolish clowns, Life is the cookie!
You thought that if you had these things, life would be good for you,
but you were given Life so that rich things could come true like:
White birches in the moonlight, a smile on your baby's face,
Or losing yourself in that treasured book curled up by the fireplace.
Like the sweet surprise of a salty kiss, a friendship deep and true;
Or that nostalgic melody that awakens memories in you.
Like the glorious glow of the setting sun, a breath of fresh-cut hay,
Or those birch trees turned to crystal on an ice-bright winter's day"
Then despite what we have done or planned,
We come to grasp what we've been shown,
And when we finally fully understand,
We'll see at last what we should have known.
