Clyde “Bud” E Johnson
Bud was born December 26, 1935 to Clyde and Ruth Johnson in Wichita Falls, Texas. After graduating from Wichita Falls High School in 1954, he attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. After a brief time in the Marine Reserves, he and his college roommate took a bicycle trip through Europe for 3 months. He loved meeting people in other countries. It was an awesome experience he loved sharing with his family.
After returning home from Europe, he attended college in Wichita Falls for one year before joining the Army where he received an Honorable discharge in 1961. He then received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology. In 1964, Bud and his wife Sandy joined the Peace Corps where they were assigned to Bolivia for 2 years working with the Aymara Indians. It had been a long time dream of Bud’s to work with people of a different culture in a third world country. He cherished the opportunity to use his education to help improve their way of life.
He taught public school for 9 years and received his Masters degree in biology. He loved teaching but gave it up for a position with the Coast Guard. In 1981, he moved to Hawaii with his family to take a position with the Department of Defense as an Environmental Protection Specialist. After 7 years he transferred to the Coast Guard as an Environmental Protection Specialist where he worked until his retirement in 2008. As an Environmental Protection Specialist, he helped manage the Pacific Region’s hazardous waste/disposal program. He was able to put his teaching skills to good use with various workshops and training sessions he organized throughout the Pacific Military bases.
Bud was a member of the Community of Christ Church where he served as an Elder in the priesthood and as pastor on 3 different occasions. He had a strong faith in God and a wonderful ministry of the God he loved. He was always there for people in need and looked for ways to serve his community. He treasured his faith, God and family.
Bud was proud that he was able to run the Honolulu Marathon and many Great Aloha Runs (8 miles). He enjoyed hiking, reading, soccer, football, travel, he loved to talk about his experiences and he loved the wonderful trade winds of Hawaii.
He is survived by his wife Sandy, sons Mark and Jeff, daughter-in-law Cons and grandchildren Tyler and Tatum. He was preceded in death by his brother Don as well as his youngest son Chris (2006).
Services for Bud will be held on February 15th at 2:00 pm at the Community of Christ Church at 5401 W. Oakey Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89146.
