Charles E. “Charlie” Saylor of Las Vegas passed away Saturday, November 24th 2018 at Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada he was 83. He was born January 22, 1935 in American Falls, Idaho to Walter and Emma Saylor joining siblings Gene Roy (brother), Mary Margaret (sister), and Emma Elizabeth (sister). The family moved to Las Vegas when he was 10, and he became a 73 year resident of Las Vegas.
He joined the US Army in 1958 where he was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He became a Private in 1959 and as a Private became a Light Vehicle driver where he had the distinct pleasure of being the personal sedan driver for Lt. Colonel George J Pruett. He also received medals in Marksmanship (rifle), Sharpshooting (Carbine), and the Good Conduct Medal. After his discharge from the Army he joined the Army reserve.
On May 11, 1965 he joined the Clark County Fire Department and went through the training program where he worked as a Fire Prevention Investigator for the first two years. In 1967 he moved up to a Firefighter position and worked on the floor as a Firefighter, soon after he took the Engineers exam and became an Engineer which he did until his retirement on August 7, of 2000. He loved being a Fire Engineer and he loved taking care of his “Rigs” as he called them. He took such Pride in making sure his “Rigs” were always clean, stocked, and ready to go when a call came in for a fire. In his 35 year career as a Fire Engineer he received an award for 30 years of Safe Driving. On his last day as a Fire Engineer the County Fire Department had a retirement party for him, there were countless Firefighters and friends, from “newbies” (as they were called) to retirees and their families that came to say goodbye and share their stories with one another. It was great to see how many people’s lives he touched over the 35 years.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Josephine M. Saylor June 6, 2009. He is survived by his daughter Charlene (Rodney) G. Svela, and son Bryan C. Saylor.
