Carol Verna Carpenter was born 28 Dec 1944 in Brockport, Monroe, New York to Robert Francis and Ruth Martha Graus Carpenter. She was their second child in the family joining her brother Robert Francis Jr. (Bobby). She was named after her Aunt Verna, her godmother. In 1949, her brother Terry was born and in 1955 her little sister Linda was born completing the family of six. She was raised in a big farmhouse on her father’s dairy farm located on at 1082 Peck Road in Hilton, New York. The farmhouse was heated by wood stoves and space heaters.
Carol attended Hilton area schools and belonged to the Hilton High School Class of 1964. During her junior year of high school she met her sweetheart, George Allen Horn, at the Strand Theater in Brockport.
On August 23 1962, Carol’s father was killed in a farm accident. Leaving her mother a widow with four children, ages 19, 17, 13 and 7. Carol’s mother went to work at Kirby’s Motel in Parma as a maid. Carol assumed the household duties at home and did the majority of cooking for the family. Also living in the family home was Grandpa August John Graus who lived there until he died in 1973 at the age of 85. Plus her paternal grandpa Clarence Abdial Carpenter lived with the family for a time.
George and Carol were married on January 5, 1963 in Brockport at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church. Then as a married couple they moved into the Carpenter family farmhouse to help with the farm work. George continued working on the farm until he got a job at Owens Illinois Glass in Brockport as a warehouseman.
While still living on the farm, George and Carol had their first baby girl, Barbara Ann (Barbie) born December 10 1963, and on June 9 1966 George Robert Horn was born. Jill was born in Dec 21 1968.
George and Carol moved out of the farmhouse living in the Brockport – Holly area. They eventually moved to the Horn family house at 107 Erie Street where George grew up. George’s mother Mary Keller Horn moved in with her daughter, Elsie Marie Horn Whitney and George and Carol rented the home. This home was directly across the street from the historical Erie Canal.
Carol eventually went to work full time at General Electric in Brockport which eventually became Black and Decker Corp. She worked there for 13 years until she was layed-off in 1986. At the same time she was layed-off George was layed-off at Owens Illinois Glass. They found themselves unemployed in a statewide factory economic downturn with little employment opportunities. The local news station did interviews with George and Carol on their unemployment situation which mirrored many families in the area. The interview aired on TV for several days.
George found some work at Fuierer Homes but not steady. Carol took educational classes to earn her GED. At this time the plan was formed to move west to Las Vegas following George’s two brothers. Paul and John.
George and Carol and Jill with Sheena, the family dog, drove across country from New York to Las Vegas the summer of 1987. Barbie and Georgie had already moved to Vegas. George got a job at the local telephone company, Centel, and Carol went to work a MERK Pharmaceuticals.
They bought their first home in 1988 at 5308 Gaborone Street in Las Vegas. Not too far from George’s brother John.
Carol enjoyed cooking and making jams and jellies. She loved making crafts and decorating for the different Holidays. Her cookies were the best and she made dozens at Christmas to give to friends and family. She was a pie maker and make homemade cheesecake.
George was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in 2003 and passed away on 17 Oct 2004 at home.
Carol eventually sold their home on Gaborone and moved to Boulder City to a condo. In 2017, she moved to Cedar City, Utah and bought a small home. In 2020, she moved back to Las Vegas to live with Barbie and Nick where she was cared for lovingly. This was during the pandemic and Barbie and the girls were home every day with her. Eventually she moved to the Oakmont Care Center where she passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023.
She is survived by her children: Barbara Ann (Nick) Valle, George Robert Horn, all of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Jill Christine Wright of Richfield, Utah. Seven grandchildren: Krista Valle, Sophia (George) Streit, Nicole Valle and Juan, all of Las Vegas. Jasmine (Auston) Torsell of Cedar City, Utah, Wesley (Kayla) Wright, and Georgia Wright of Richfield, Utah. Nine great grandchildren: Kayzen, Harper, Kolter, Shiloh, Berkley, Blakely, Tuesday, Hadley, and Cove. She is also survived by her brothers, Bob (Marilyn) Carpenter, Florida and Terry (Ellen) Carpenter, Adams Basin, New York, and a sister, Linda (Don) Rocco, of Spencerport, New York. Brother’s in law, Paul Milton (Alberta) Horn of Henderson, Nevada, and John Robert (Barbara) of Las Vegas, Nevada and many nieces and nephews and friends.
She will missed by family and friends but we will look back and remember the good times we enjoyed with her.
Services were private and held on December 3, 2023. She will be buried beside her husband George at Palm Memorial Park in northwest Las Vegas.
