Betty Jane Roper, 1930-2013, of Las Vegas, was born in Kenefic, Okla. She was the fifth of six children, and the first girl. Her father died in 1935 and Betty learned to work hard (picking cotton) and play hard (basketball). In 1948, she eloped (on a dare-from a track meet-to Texas) and married Lester Howard Lindsey. His work with the Atomic Energy Commission brought them to Las Vegas in 1960. They had three daughters along the way. Betty graduated from Nevada Southern University (now known as UNLV) in 1966. She was a classroom teacher for the CCSD for 30 years. Betty was married to Robert Broadbent from 1972-1984. She was married to Oscar Perry from 1988 until his death in 2012. She is survived by her sister, Joan Cowein of Cincinnati; her daughters, Barbara (Jay) Roberts, Pamela (Michael) Hardin and Shirley Lindsey; five beloved grandsons, Jay "Robby" (Tara) Roberts, Tass (Tamra) Hardin, Chad (Joy) Hardin, Kyle (Jennifer) Roberts and Mikey (Kim) Hardin; and 15 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8, with services following, both at Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave. She will be buried at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 7251 W. Lone Mountain Road (at Lone Mountain and Tenaya). In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity that is closest to your heart.
