Art was born in Boston, MA, on May 5, 1926, the second son of Jacob and Frances Marget Pastel. He grew up in Los Angeles, CA and maintained many of his childhood and teen-age friendships throughout life. After graduating from Fairfax High School, Art attended College of the Pacific and UC Berkley before graduating from UCLA with a degree in aeronautical engineering. After college, Art served in World War II as a naval aviator and spent time on the USS Iowa. At the outbreak of the Korean War, he again answered the call to serve aboard the USS Vermilion and took part in a large-scale seaborne supply lift to a new airbase under construction in Thule, Greenland. Later, Art was asked to fly for Israel; he declined due to his responsibilities as a husband and father.
Art’s love of learning led him to obtain a Juris Doctor from USC. He applied that knowledge to a life-long and accomplished career in construction and real estate development in California, New York, Nevada, and Colorado. He loved his family, flying Bridge, good food, traveling, work, and visiting with friends. And his dog, Charlie. He had a sunny disposition, a marvelous sense of humor, and a charming smile. His service to his country remained paramount to any professional success.
Art was predeceased by his parents; older brother, Paul Pastel; daughter, Jean Pastel La Joie; and son, Ronald Martin Pastel. He is survived by his wife, Karen Diamond; daughters, Judith Walker of Castle Rock, CO, Elyse Pastel (Barry) of Los Angeles, CA, and Carey Goeth (Michael) of Sequim, WA; stepsons, Jeffrey Diamond of Las Vegas and Brian Diamond (Karen) of Manhattan Beach, CA; brother, Louis Pastel of Tarzana, CA; daughter-in-law, Nina Hale of Covina, CA; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a myriad of loving nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN or the ASPCA.
Funeral and burial services will be held at 1:00PM on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at King David Memorial Chapel and Cemetery, 2697 E. Eldorado Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89120. Guests are invited to a reception following inside the chapel.
