My name is Eleanor and Andy Smith was and will forever be was my favorite uncle and along with John Cromwell he was also my father. He provided much more than groceries and my favorite green and gray Eddie Bauer coat...He gave my sisters and I love and attention our whole lives. My uncle Andy was a great uncle long before his nieces had children, but no surprise... He was a GREAT uncle to our children as well. I am so blessed to have not only had him in my life, but to have been able to share him with my own children. A few of my favorite memories of Uncle Andy with my children: Aunt Marylou and Uncle Andy came to Camp Lejuene NC in their Lazy Daze to visit. We picked up my son Joshua from his preschool in the rig!! He loved that. Joshua referred to Marylou as his "other grandma" which made Andy his other grandpa. Rebecca also thought of them that way. In 2011 Rachel and Kelly were in a National Cheerleading competition in Las Vegas. Uncle Andy and Aunt ML were the only reason we could afford to go at all. They invited us into their home instead of staying at the hotel with the rest of the squad. I am so glad that we had that time with them. My dear uncle Andy came to their VERY LOUD competition on the big Vegas stage and he was their cheerleader as they cheered!! He took them to see Rachel's most loved dolphins! She was in awe. And my Kelly... well she got to see her tigers!! And me... Well I got to spend the day with this AMAZING man and watch my children beam as he made a few of their childhood dreams come true as he had also done for me as both a child and an adult!! I will miss my uncle Andy, but I cherish every memory I have and I know I will see him again one day. Until then I will share my memories and love for him with my beautiful aunt, my loving cousin Trevor and the rest of my family.

Our deepest sympathy from ARCO Retirees in the passing of Andy!  As you might already know, our retiree club recently disbanded in August.  Retired as a club, as so many were of an age they were unable to attend our gatherings & we were unable to generate any help with the running of the club, So we had a final picnic at the Refinery.  The Retiree Club did celebrate 50 years last Christmas.  A long Run!

It's hard to fathom what you and Trevor are going through right now, after losing Steve so recently and now Andy.  I hope Trevor and his wife have been able to be with you.  Even though we accept God's will, it still hurts.  The only comfort I can imagine is that not only is Andy with God, but he's with Steve.

In a spin, so I am very hesitant to call.  There are probably fifty jillion calls coming in from all your friends from all over.  Your email about Andy was beautiful, very complete and said what people usually ask, so it was a big favor to us all.


I hope you will let us know if there is to be a memorial service.  And I hope you have family with you now -- from what I know about these times, family there to help is a blessing.  You will have your hands full!

We will miss Andy, and it was really hard to "wrap our heads around" your words as we read them.  We are thinking of all the good times we had together -- and it's good that you sent that photo of your and him recently.  That's what we'll remember!

October 1 – a card

Dear Mary Louise,

I have been thinking of you a great deal, though it doesn't look like it.

Andy and I lived in the same neighborhood, tho' at different times, I think.  In the 1970's we lived on Kingsbury Blvd. in U. City and I think Andy's parents were still on Pershing – I may be wrong.  One thing I know for sure – when we were growing up, Andy & I were in the same Sunday School class & taught by Warren Sprague.  It was a good experience.

The news of Andy's passing made me realize that he (Andy) was a big & good influence in my life & the fact that he is no longer here left a sizeable hole in my heart.  Andy had 100 % integrity; he was always there to help; he could always be counted on; he & you were / are two of the most generous people I have ever encountered.  He is missed by me.

As for you, you will pre-vial.  I cannot imagine how you feel, but I know you will come out on top.  You grasp things differently and often more surely then most people.  And often faster.

Greg, Elena, Isabella and I are flying to Boston very early Tuesday morning. We will be touring Boston and NH where I grew up. We will be flying home late Tues the 30th. I will call you when I'm away.

 Wish I could give you more support and help but I know that you have many close friends that will stay close to you. Art will be in the very nice hospice facility for respite while I'm away. Clay a couple doors away and my next door neighbor, Don and Keala will keep an eye on things for me.

It doesn't seem possible that Andy is gone; it is so very sad.  You're in our hearts and dour prayers.  I so wish we were closer so that I could stop by and see you and bring some goodies.

Jack stopped at Littlewoods, and he, Larry and Kurt talked about their scouting memories of Andy and your sons for and hour and a half.  And I have wonderful memories of dinners at your house when all the Scouting parents were there.  (At one dinner I brought a cake I had decorated myself.)  Andy was there greeting everyone and making us feel welcome.  Jack has a thousand more happy memories of Andy out camping with all the boys – and of Steve and Trevor.  Jack continued as Scout Master for several yeas after our son John got his Eagle because no other father of the younger boys was willing to take over.  (We have a grandson in Arizona who is working toward his Eagle.)

I'm sure your friends and family have been with you, Mary Louise, and I'm glad of that.  You are a very strong person, and Trevor is your support.  That is good.  Andy is with God in heaven and you'll join him and Steve some day.

I can't tell you how sorry I was to learn that Andy passed away.  A thought came to mind that I picked up attending the funeral of a good friend.  “If you live on in the memory of those you loved, you never die.”  

I find that a beautiful thought - sort of what we've been given to be able to carry on when a cherished loved one is no longer there.  I will never forget the trips to the Ozarks and Andy's famous statement - ”ML, that's a prize boob-hatchery.” Over a bridge bid.

Please accept our sympathy for your terrible loss.  Andy was a fine man and will be missed by many.  We regret that it had been so long since we had seen you and Andy.  Barbara thought seriously about going to Three Rivers this year but at the last minute we decided that we didn't want to drive through LA again and would just confine ourselves to our own festival. 
 
It is comforting to know that Andy passed peacefully into God's hands.

As you said, Andy is with Steve.  I was thinking about Andy, I don't believe I ever heard him raise his voice or say an unkind word about anyone.  He was loved by many people.

This has been a difficult letter to write as I wanted to accurately convey our heartfelt feelings about how much Andy's friendship has meant to us but I have discovered that such a letter is an impossible task.  Andy was so special to us that I simply cannot find the words I need to say.

It was obvious form our first meeting that Andy was a fine man and that he was totally dedicated to you, Mary Lou, and your two sons.  Andy was always so proud of your culinary skills, your skill at putting on a grand party whether it be planned for a time or it was a last-minute decision.  He always made everyone feel so welcome in your beautiful home!  Marv and I always enjoyed Andy's wisdom and high intelligence.  He was always so quiet about it, but when it did surface we were fascinated by his knowledge.  Through these discussions with Andy, we learned about topics that we had not explored before.

The two of you were so blessed to have shared such a rich =, happy and adventurous life.  Isn't it great to have so many memories of such a wonderful life story and to have had Andy as your loving companion through it all!

Knowing you and Andy certainly has enriched our lives, and we are most thankful for that.  We know you as a woman of strong faith, Mary Lou, and that will carry you through this enormous loss.  That and the love and support from your special family and many dear friends.  This is our Goodbye to our special friend Andrew Smith!

Our support and prayers are with you.  We know Andy is going forward embracing and expressing Life to the fullest.  In the C.S. Hymnal Page 66 it states:  “O perfect Life, in thy completeness held, None can beyond Thy omnipresence stray; Safe in thy Love, we live and sing alway.”

When I spoke with Ed about Andy's passing – Ed's reply immediately was “Andy was a true friend of mine.  I always had good conversation with Andy and I felt his warm friendship with me.  And he was special to me.”  Ed and I spoke of our families going to New York City for the Thanksgiving Day Parade.  This is when you lived in East Brunswick, New Jersey. We stayed at Andy's office building in New York City keeping nice and warm while watching the parade.  We returned to y hour home for delicious food and treats.

You Mary Lou, (formerly Mary Louise in New Jersey), Andy, Trevor and Stephen took loving care of our girls when Ed and I went house hunting in upstate New York.  We knew they were safe and happy with you and we are thankful for your kind thoughtfulness.  We have the happiest memories of our times together with Trevor, Stephen, Andy and you from our picnics in the park, July 4th celebrations, elephant parties, church (Princeton), ladies luncheons, Holiday Get-togethers and a joyful time visiting Yorba Linda, CA and Stephen came by to see us.  Hymn238 says “For all the good the past hath had Remains to make our own time glad.”

I remember you sharing with us your trips to Maine and your family looking forward to the lobster meals.  I believe both Trevor and Stephen are Eagle Scouts and Andy also.  We are indeed blessed that you have kept us in your circle of friends – although we feel as family – we shared in wonderful times though many years.  The heart of love overflows for our dear friendship and relationship as it is a gift from God which is highly valued by us.  Ed, Louise & I support and embrace you and Trevor and am certain Claire and Janice do also.  I am here 24 / 7 if you would like to talk at anytime.
