Lawrie, Mary A. "Toni" 69 of St. Petersburg, FL passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving friends on Wed., Dec 15, 2010 at the Largo Medical Center. Toni was born Jan. 9, 1941 in Indianapolis, Indiana and moved to this area in 1981 from Indianapolis. She was employed at Bay Pines VA Hospital for many years. Toni graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1959 and then from St. Vincent School of Nursing in 1963. She joined the Peace Corps in 1963 and traveled to Malaysia and got out in 1966. Toni then joined the US Air Force and served her country from 1966-1970 earning the rank of Captain. She served in Vietnam in Cam Rahn Bay from 1969-1970. Toni was Director of Women's Veterans of the Southeast United States from 1981-2005. She earned a Masters Degree in Public Health from Indiana University. Sagamore of the Wabash in the state of Indiana, received the Unsung Hero award in 1969 from the DAR, served as the Director of Nursing at Wishard Hospital, founder of Peoples Health Center, NESCO. and has a clinic named in her honor the Mary A. Lawrie Clinic for Women Veterans. Toni is survived by her loving family of four brothers, Douglas (Karen) Lawrie, John (Randi) Lawrie, Chris (Libby) Lawrie and Jeff (Becky) Lawrie and a sister, Kate Lawrie, seven nieces and twelve nephews and 45 great nieces and nephews. Toni's loving cat Peaches and ex-husband, Walter Walker. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Ruth (Kraeszig) Lawrie and sister, Margaret Schoening. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Bay Pines VAHCS, Voluntary Services (135), Women Veterans Fund, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., Bay Pines, FL 33744. Friends are calling from 1-3 pm with Memorial Services at 3 pm on Sunday, December 19, 2010 all at the Moss Feaster Funeral Home, 13401 Indian Rocks Road, Largo, FL 727-562-2080.
