James (Jim) Howard Estep, 87, of Sanford, Florida passed away Wednesday February 22, 2023. He was born December 25, 1935 in Gordon, West Virginia. He grew up in Madison, West Virginia. A multi-sport athlete, he graduated from Scott High School in 1954. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Virginia and Japan. After a whirlwind romance, he married Phyllis Painter and they celebrated 66 years of marriage last June.
Jim’s working life was with Southland Corporation (7-Eleven Food Stores), from which he retired in 1987. He later worked as a food broker, and late in retirement he worked part-time for Publix.
Jim was a tremendously dedicated father, coaching his sons’ sports teams, teaching Sunday School and leading the United Methodist Youth Fellowship. He loved doing “Dad stuff” like teaching his beloved daughters how to drive a stick shift and change a flat tire. He taught his four kids life lessons on work, faith, and family, mostly by his own example.
Jim’s faith was a priority in his life. He was an active lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, most recently First United Methodist Sanford for the last 41 years. His daily Bible reading and Christian reflections gave him a deep love of God and people. Always serving others first, his humility was inspiring.
Jim is survived by Phyllis, his wife of 66 years, his four children, Terri (John), Sandy, Steve and David, and eight grandchildren Amy (CJ), Stephanie, Baxter (Laura), Austin, Ryan, Casey, Sammie, and Oscar. He was great grandfather to Payton, Riley, Meghan, Madeleine, Tim, Abby, Ellie, and one more on the way. He was the favorite uncle to many beloved nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 4, at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church Sanford with Pastors Meghan and David Killingsworth presiding.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Sanford “Roof Fund” or “Picnic Project.”
