James Gerard Donelan, age 81, of Largo, Florida, peacefully departed this life on September 19, 2024. Born on October 20, 1942, in the borough of Brooklyn, New York, he was the cherished son of Ida and John Donelan.
A proud alumnus of John Adams High School, Marine Corp veteran, James devoted over two decades of his life to serving the community as a distinguished detective with the NYPD. His unwavering commitment to justice and his compassionate spirit earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and citizens alike. A devoted member of the Knights of Columbus and the Emerald Society, he exemplified the values of brotherhood and service.
On January 14, 1961, James united in marriage with his beloved Rosemarie, embarking on a journey filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams. Together, they nurtured a family that became the heart of his life. He is survived by his devoted children, Catherine (John) and Brendan (Laura), along with his treasured grandchildren: John, Michael, Alyssa, Liam, and John-John, and his sweet great-granddaughter, Amy.
James was a man of many passions, with a profound love for the mountains, hunting, golf, football, and baseball. His enthusiasm for these pursuits brought joy to family gatherings and countless cherished memories. He had a remarkable ability to light up any room with his humor and warmth, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
He is predeceased by his dear brothers, Jack and Arthur Donelan.
James Gerard Donelan will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched, a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion.
A visitation will be held on Monday September 23, 2024 from 4-7 pm at Serenity Funeral Home, 13401 Indian rocks road, Largo, FL 33774.
A funeral mass will be held 1pm October 12, 2024 at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church, 10895 Hamlin Blvd, Largo, FL 33774.
