Charles Frederick Jaeger II

Gunnery Sergeant (Retired) Charles F. “Chuck” Jaeger, II, 75, of Clearwater, Florida, passed away June 22, 2022. He was married to Velma “Vel” E. Hulley Laursen in 1970. She preceded him in death on July 2, 2018.

His siblings Robert Wallace Jaeger (1948–2007), Susan Jaeger Andrews (1951–2016) and Richard W Jaeger (1961–2008) all preceded him in death.

Chuck is survived by his children Charles “Chuck” (Verena), Gordon (Laura) and Ruth (Stephen) and one granddaughter Vanessa Marie Jaeger.

Chuck was born on November 5, 1946 in Tampa, Florida to Thelma Wallace & C. Frederick Jaeger. Chuck graduated from Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, Virginia. Chuck's sturdy frame made for a good right tackle on the high school football team, he also lettered on the varsity wrestling team. Outside of school he enjoyed, along with his brother Bobby, to go camping with the local Boy Scout troop. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Chapman College, Master of Public Administration from Golden Gate University and Theological Education from the University of the South School of Theology.

Chuck lived his adult life under the mantra of “duty before self”.

Chuck was a proud Marine and Vietnam veteran. He enlisted in June of1965 as a Radio Technician and served continuously for 22 years before retiring in April of 1986. His tours of service took him to Greece, Italy, Spain, Japan and Australia. He served two tours in Vietnam and later participated in the evacuation of Saigon. His military decorations include the Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal w/5 stars, National Defense Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/4 stars, Humanitarian Service Medal, Vietnam Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation, Combat Action Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Action w/palm, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Gallantry Cross w/palm & frame, and Rifle & Pistol Expert Badges. Upon retiring he moved with his family from Camp Pendleton, California back to his hometown of Clearwater, Florida.

Chuck continued to work hard to support his family and eventually retired again after 18 years of public service as a Classification Specialist with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department.

Chuck was an active member of St. Dunstan’s Anglican Church for many years. He sang in the church choir, served on the Vestry and took pride in his work behind the scenes. He also loved shopping for St. Dunstan's monthly themed potlucks, picnics, or other special occasions and enjoyed driving around town to find the best deals. Chuck's love of the Lord was evident by his devotion to his church family, providing service to those in need and his extensive study of scripture.

Chuck volunteered as a Committee Member with the Dunedin Troop 58 of the Boy Scouts of America. He taught Rifle Shooting and the three Citizenship Merit Badge courses: Citizenship in the Community, in the Nation and in the World. Chuck had a high standard for the boys, and he wanted more than the right answer. He was often quoted saying, "Ok, that's right. Now tell me why it is right." Chuck participated in many camping adventures with his sons and nephews too. He carried on this tradition with his daughter with the Girl Scouts of America.

Chuck had a passion for cooking. He could grill, smoke, roast and sauté just about any kind of meat. No fish! He loved a good steak and butter on top of his butter. Chuck was an amazing baker too. His 'death by chocolate' cake was devoured by many over the years.

Chuck loved traveling with Vel. Whether it was to faraway places or a Star Trek convention, they enjoyed it together. They were members of Mensa and there was no talking if Jeopardy was on the television (unless it was framed in the form of a question). They loved Symphony in the Park on 4th of July, and later from the comfort of their living room with booming surround sound.

Chuck loved all things military from planes, aircraft carriers, tanks and more. He also loved Samurais and Viking warriors. Like Vel, they were avid readers. In his retirement, Chuck read several books within a week. He also had a fondness for collecting coins.

A celebration of Chuck’s life will be held at 11am on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at St. Dunstan’s Anglican Church in Largo, Florida. Military Service will be held at Serenity Gardens Memorial Park following the church service.
