She is survived by her sons, Greg (Nola) McNeil and Kevin (Jan) McNeil; grandchildren, Sarah (Dan) Hershberger, Owen Shultz, Brian Shultz, Matt (Devin) McNeil, Bethany (Greg) Zelski, Derek (Jessica) Albro, Jen McNeil, and Mike McNeil; great-grandchildren, Sydney, Gavin, and Emerson Hershberger, Destiny and Derek Jr. Albro, Andi and Charlee Zelski, and Mia McNeil; sister, Peggy (Robert) Duquette; many nieces and nephews.
Mary Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm N. McNeil and daughters, Margaret (Richard) Shultz and Kathryn (Jeff) Albro.
Mary Helen was born in Flint, Michigan but moved to the Lansing area about 70 years ago. She is the daughter of Alvin T. Benson and Mary Margaret (Van Colen) Benson and step mother Luella Benson.
She started her collegiate education at the University of Michigan but finished her degree many years later at Michigan State University.
Mary Helen was devoted to all children and her guiding spirit touched many students during her long career as an educator at Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Lansing. Her love of children would brighten the room every time she met a young person.
She and her husband Malcolm loved traveling, especially to their summer home at Glen Lake in northern Michigan and spending winters in Myrtle Beach.
Mary Helen leaves behind a multitude of family, friends, and former students to cherish their memories of Mary Helen.
The family is very grateful for the wonderful care of the nurses at Sparrow Hospital and for the loving community at East Lansing Independence Village.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at St. Gerard Catholic Church 4437 W. Willow Highway, Lansing, MI 48917 with Rev. Robert C. Bacik presiding. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lansing. Visitation will be held at Tiffany Funeral Home, Lansing from 5:30-8 pm on Friday, December 10, 2021 with a Rosary being prayed at 7:30 pm.
