Marcus Garvey Metoyer, Sr. was born in Derry, Louisiana February 5,1926 to St. Clair Metoyer and Nazy Conant Metoyer; they both predeceased him. He passed away peacefully on April 21, 2022.
He grew up on a farm where he helped work the land and raise animals with his family. As a young man he enlisted in the Army during World War II. He attained the rank of sergeant and became a crane operator. Being honorably discharged in 1946 he visited Lansing, MI with his brother where he decided to settle after meeting his future wife Lois Maxine Lett.
A few years later he became a business partner with his father-in-law in Fay Lett & Sons Heating and Cooling ,a HVAC business. He was a member of and served on the boards of several professional organizations. He was a respected business man in the Lansing community. In his leisure time Marcus loved playing cards, especially poker. He would sometimes play long hours with friends.
Marcus was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Maxine Lett Metoyer, the mother of his children and his second wife, Marjorie Caldwell Metoyer; his nine brothers and two sisters. Leaving to cherish his memory are his son, Marcus Metoyer Jr, (Lisa) and his daughter Rosanna Metoyer (Earl Crawley), three loving grandchildren, Marcus Metoyer III, Bernard Crawley (Barbara) and Ryan Crawley (Bridgette) his brother Ewing (Lou) Metoyer and an extensive host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a very special friend Carl King.
Marcus was a kind, caring, and compassionate man. He loved his family fiercely.
