Lynn Ann Stelter (Hogeboom) peacefully passed away on April 13, 2023 at Glacier Hills Assisted Living in Ann Arbor Michigan at the age of 99. Lynn was preceded in death in 1979 by her husband, Robert Stelter and her second husband, in 1999, Paul Stelter. She is survived by her six children: Deborah Westcott and her husband Dave, of Burlington, North Carolina, Carol Crites and her husband, Alan, of Los Altos Hills, California, James Stelter and his wife, Terry, of Holland, Michigan, son John Stelter and his wife, Lisa, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Tom Stelter of Greenwood Village, Colorado, and Bill Stelter and his wife, Gail of Chicago, Illinois as well as Paul's children Larry Stelter, Steve Steve and Sue Petersen. Also surviving Lynn are 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Lynn was born on January 10, 1923 in Yonkers, New York to Ada Mae Hogeboom and Ralph Jacob Hogeboom. Lynn recalled wonderful years growing up in Yonkers and taking fun trips into New York City with girlfriends for shopping and shows. After Lynn’s father’s death, when she was fourteen years old, Lynn and her mother moved to Flint, Michigan to live with Lynn’s older sister and brother-in-law.
After high school graduation, Lynn worked in Flint as a telephone operator for Michigan Bell. She recalled how the entire switch board lit up when the ending of WWII was declared. Also in Flint, Lynn met Bob Stelter, a student at GM Tech, at a dance and, after dating for several years, they were married on May 31, 1946.
Bob worked for General Motors his entire career and each promotion meant a move to another city. Lynn and Bob’s first child, Deborah Lynn, was born in Flint and then they moved around the country with children being born in Ottawa, Illinois, Kansas City, Decatur, Georgia and Michigan.
Lynn is remembered by her family for creating a loving home wherever they moved, for making holidays and birthdays festive, and as their “cheerleader” at soccer and baseball games. Lynn also cared for her mother who lived with the family for thirty years.
Tragically, after a move to Melbourne, Australia in 1978, Bob died of heart failure there at 54 years old. Lynn returned to Birmingham, Michigan with her youngest son, Bill, who was in eighth grade.
Bob’s older brother, Paul, lost his wife the same year Bob died. Lynn and Paul communicated about family matters and found companionship in their parallel lives. They were married in 1981 and shared almost twenty years of marriage in Jupiter, Florida enjoying golf and traveling.
After Paul passed away in 1999, Lynn continued to live in Florida with many visits from her extended family. At the age of 91, she moved to Ann Arbor to be near her son, John, and there she enjoyed the residents and activities at Glacier Hills Senior Living Community.
A funeral service for Lynn will be held at White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery in Troy, Michigan on Friday, April 21, 2023 at 3pm.
Special thoughts and gratitude go out to the Glacier Hills staff for their excellent care and cheerful attitudes.
Lynn found special solace in the Lord’s Prayer. Please remember her when you hear these words: “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.”
Memorial Contributions in Lynn's honor may be made to Arbor Hospice.
