James Alfred Toman, age 89, born in Lansing, MI to the late George and Mabel Toman on August 5, 1931, died on Friday, June 25, 2021. He was looking forward to his 90th birthday and almost made it. Jim graduated from Lansing Eastern High School in 1950 and married his high school sweetheart, Millie Baker in 1951. Their 2 children, Karla and Bob completed the family and life was wonderful. His family was the most important part of his life. He was a wonderful husband and super dad. His faith was strong, and he was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church. Jim joined the United States Post Office in 1956 and retired in 1987 as a Tour Superintendent of the Collins Road facility. Then, he and Millie both retired from the former Laboratory of Clinical Medicine in 1992. He often joked he was retired longer than he worked. He enjoyed his retirement, spending time with family and going to “the place” up north summer and winter. James also enjoyed boating, hunting, snowmobiling, campfires, comradery with friends and making his famous soups. Later years, he spent winters in Florida and finally sitting by the fire with Millie, a bourbon and ginger ale in one hand and a TV remote in the other and a word search book close by made him content and happy, then the other shoe fell. He is survived by his wife, Millie of 70 years; daughter, Karla Eubank; son, Robert (Leanne) Toman; grandchildren, Ryan, (Christiana) Toman, Kimberly (Logan) Castle, Thad, Seth (Sara) and Ruby Eubank; great-grandchildren, Declan and Anna Toman, Milo Castle; nieces, Rebecca Toman Gregg and Jennifer Toman Nichols; extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Robert and Garnett Baker, son-in-law, Jeffrey Eubank, brother and sister-in-law, Dave, and Judy Toman. Life will never be the same without him, but he knew he was loved, and his family knew he loved them, and they will cherish the memories made. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 28, 2021, from 6-8 pm at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes Lansing Chapel. A 2 PM Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at North Star Cemetery, North Star, MI with Deacon David Borzenski of St. Therese Catholic Church officiating, James will be laid to rest in his family lot. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Therese Catholic Church, Lansing. To leave an on-line condolence for the family please visit www.grlansing.com.
